The Container Gallery (inside Bross hair salon)
1F Hills Daikanyama 1-8-30 KamiMeguro Meguro-ku Tokyo 153-0051
Starting from tomorrow, Tokyo's art collective, Shibuhouse, will be "intervening" at The Container, a curious art space inside a shipping container—or constructed to look like one—installed inside the fashionable Bross Hair Salon in Daikanyama. The Container is curated by Shai Ohayon, an "art nomad" from Israel (via Toronto and London), who launched the space in 2011 as an alternative spot to Tokyo's thriving art scene. Visitors can easily get cutting-edge haircuts while viewing cutting-edge art in the diminutive gallery
. Shibuhouse gets its name from the simple fact that all its members share the same house in the bustling neighborhood of Shibuya in central Tokyo. They are mostly art practitioners, except for a few medical students, that aim to blur the boundary between the home and the art studio. For their installation at The Container, titled House 100, members of Shibuhouse will convert the tiny space into an office, and stage "conversations" with Tokyo cognoscenti on how to integrate art production into the domestic space. If you can't be in Tokyo during the duration of the show—like me—
the interviews will be streamed live here [ http://www.ustream.tv/channel/house-100 ] or follow them on Twitter [ @shibuhouse ].
